Located in one of Lisbon’s most elegant quarters – Chiado - the building dates back to 1790. Displaying hybrid features that were unusual in the 18th century, the building combines the characteristics of an aristocratic residence – though in an understated way – with an assumed component of financial return. The first floor is the most striking as it boasts a beautiful tile collection (most likely produced by the renowned Fábrica do Rato), frescoes and ceilings with decorative moldings, which sets it apart from the other floors. This partially aristocratic / partially traditional solution resulted from the emergence of a new social order – the wealthy bourgeoisie – that in 18th century Lisbon chose to build smaller and more functional homes, better suited to a very different lifestyle from the one maintained by Lisbon’s former aristocracy.
